St. Wendell, Germany -
The 59th World Championship will be held next
September 20 till 24 In the City of St Wendell,
Germany. This picturesque city is located near
the southern border of Germany-France, about
100 miles SW of the city of Frankfurt and about
75 miles from Luxemburg.
This
tournament is organized by the Union Mondiale
de Billard which is the world-body for all Carom/Billiard
games. This is the most prestigious 3-Cushion Billiard
event in the world. In contrast to World Cup Events
where participation is open to anyone for a fee,
the World Championship participants have to win
their right to participate by competing in their
respective countries. Usually only the first and
second place finishers in the national championships
participate in another elimination round where
they face all the champions of their respective
Billiard Confederation.
There
are several billiard confederations around the
world. The European Confederation include all the
european nations. The Pan American Confederation
include all the countries within the Latin American
continent, not including the United States of America
who holds a Federation to itself. The Asian Carom
Billiards Confederation include the Asian Countries
and the Algerian, and Egyptian federations
represent the African Continent.
The
seeded players include last year's world champion
and 23 of the top ranked players in the world according
to the points accumulated in UMB events throughout
the year. In addition, The European confederation
holds 10 spots for the top 10 players of the European
Confederation Championship. The Pan American Confederation
holds an additional 6 spots, the Asian Region is
entitled to send 4 participants, while the USA
and the African Region hold 2 representatives each.
The Hosting country (German Federation) holds two
additional wild cards. The UMB is also entitled
to include another wild card player.
